REI BaseCamp 6 Review

"I bought the REI BaseCamp 6 as my first tent in 20+ years and I am GLAD I chose this model. It truly is watertight, holds up well in the wind and has a full coverage fly with 2 doors for excellent ventilation.

My only caution is that it says it'll sleep 6 people, but in actuality it would sleep 4 comfortably with sleeping pads, bags, etc.

I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a GREAT family tent."

"Bought this tent last year, just came down from the Blue Ridge Trail on an overnight. The tent stood up well to the 40-50 mph wind gusts and light snow. 2 vestibules help with gear - but don't really use the back one. Will agree, the info says (6 man) but 4 plus gear is all you can really fit. This tent WILL keep you dry."

"I bought this tent to accompany my son to Scout Camp and was the envy of the adult leaders. During the one very rainy day, everything stayed dry. The fly extends down to the ground and is attached to the tent with quick release buckles. The front vestibule, extending out far enough with enough height, allowed me to sit in my camp chair, stay dry and watch the rain come down. Ventilation was good and the built in pockets allowed me to stay organized. Set up and take down is easy with 2 people. I love this tent for long term stationary camping. This is a big tent- more than enough for 4 with a lot of gear. 6 people would be a real crowd."

"I wanted to replace an old Coleman family camping tent with something sturdier. I found it in this BaseCamp 6. The tent, as the name states, works very well as a basecamp for day hikes and other all day activities. It’s nice to “come home” to a space to rest up before starting dinner. It is big enough to fit 4 people and ALL their stuff or will sleep 6. Although sleeping 6 will work you won't want to go past 4 or maybe 5 if you have small ones.

The construction, head room, ease of use is great. There are two doors good amount of pockets and a loft for overhead lighting or storage. I haven’t had to use the rainfly (I pitch it each time I use the tent) but I’m confident it would keep out the weather. I’ve used it in 30-50 mph wind gusts and no problems-it is very sturdy. Upgrade the stakes and you have yourself the making of a real comfortable place. I’m eager to hear of someone using this in a group backpacking trip.
